The Brain Boost Challenge.
On Friday, 18th October 2024, the Brain Boost Challenge took place. This sporting fundraising event was organised in collaboration with Hospital Tjongerschans and Sportstad Heerenveen. Together, we brought over 160 participants to two different locations, where they exercised non-stop for twelve hours with one shared goal: raising as much money as possible for the ABI Exercise Team. The result was an impressive total of €27,500, all of which will go directly to this fantastic initiative.
A special anniversary year for Light4U.
For us at Light4U, this event was particularly special as we are celebrating our 20th anniversary this year. To mark this milestone, we wanted to do something meaningful. We chose to support the ABI Exercise Team, a project that offers people with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) the chance to stay active and promote their recovery. This team plays a crucial role in both the physical and mental rehabilitation of people with ABI and is entirely dependent on volunteers and sponsors. For us, this was the perfect way to celebrate our anniversary in a meaningful way.
Twelve hours of team exercise.
The Brain Boost Challenge tasked seven teams with staying active from 08:00 to 20:00, non-stop. The participants were sponsored by friends, family, and business associates, and they exercised at two locations: at Light4U in Joure and Sportstad Heerenveen. Both locations were connected via a live link, and the energy was palpable, helped along by DJ beats that added to the atmosphere. As Ko Nederhoed, co-initiator of the ABI Exercise Team, put it: “Everyone brought their energy. It was overwhelming and heartwarming.”
The impact of ABI.
Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) can be caused by a stroke, an accident, or a brain tumour. The effects are often severe and lasting, ranging from speech problems and paralysis to memory loss. For people with ABI, it is vital to remain active even after the initial phase of care. The ABI Exercise Team offers them this opportunity through activities like fitness, walking, and swimming, all under professional guidance, thanks to the collaboration between Ziekenhuis Tjongerschans, Sportstad Heerenveen, and the Edwin van der Sar Foundation.
A future full of movement.
The Brain Boost Challenge was not only a successful fundraising event but also helped raise awareness and create solidarity around the topic of ABI. Thanks to the €27,500 raised, the future of the ABI Exercise Team is secured for the coming years. New exercise programmes can be developed, and equipment can be purchased to support these individuals in their rehabilitation process.
We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved together for the ABI Exercise Team and would like to thank all the sponsors, volunteers, and everyone involved for their contributions and tremendous effort.
