RGB, RGBW and RGBW+TW explained

Dynamic lighting is no longer limited to entertainment venues and colourful façade lighting. Today, RGB, RGBW and RGBW+TW systems are increasingly used in retail, museums, hospitality, galleries and commercial interiors to create flexible atmospheres while maintaining professional white-light quality.

But what exactly is the difference between RGB, RGBW and RGBW+TW? Although the names look similar, each technology offers different performance in white light quality, colour rendering, efficiency and flexibility.

RGB: strong colours, limited white light

RGB systems use red, green and blue LEDs. By mixing these three channels, they can create saturated colours and dynamic scenes. This makes RGB effective for entertainment, clubs, façades and decorative installations.

The limitation appears when white light is needed. RGB creates white by mixing coloured LEDs together. Technically this works, but the result often feels artificial. White scenes may look cold, slightly magenta or greenish. Skin tones, materials and products can also lose their natural appearance.

For this reason, RGB is powerful for effects, but less suitable when the luminaire must also provide comfortable architectural light.

RGBW: colour with a dedicated white channel

RGBW adds a separate white LED channel to the red, green and blue LEDs. This makes a major difference. The luminaire no longer depends only on RGB mixing for white scenes, so the white light becomes smoother, more efficient and more comfortable.

Pastel colours also become more refined because the white channel can soften the saturated RGB output. This makes RGBW more suitable for retail, hospitality, restaurants and commercial interiors where atmosphere and daily usability are both important.

Still, RGBW is not automatically professional. The quality of the white LED, optics, driver and dimming behaviour remains critical. A good RGBW luminaire should first behave as a good white luminaire.

RGBW+TW: dynamic colour and Tunable White

RGBW+TW combines RGB colour channels with warm-white and cool-white LEDs. This gives the system separate control over saturated colours and colour temperature.

This is the key difference. The luminaire can create colour effects when needed, but it can also move from warm ambience to cooler daylight scenes with far better control. This is especially useful in spaces where the atmosphere changes throughout the day.

For architectural projects, RGBW+TW is the most complete solution. It supports dynamic colour, flexible white light, higher visual comfort and better adaptation to different functions within the same space.

Why quality matters

Not every dynamic luminaire performs well in real projects. Poor systems can show unstable whites, visible colour separation, flicker, stepping during dimming or weak colour rendering. These issues become highly visible on white walls, artworks, glossy materials, food, fashion and skin tones.

Efficiency is also important. RGB systems are usually inefficient at producing white light because all coloured channels must work together. RGBW improves this by using a dedicated white channel. RGBW+TW goes further by using dedicated warm- and cool-white channels, making white scenes more natural and efficient.

Control also defines the experience. With intuitive systems such as Casambi, scenes can be created and adjusted more easily. This makes dynamic lighting more practical for commercial spaces, galleries, hospitality projects and retail environments where layouts and moods change over time.

For commercial, retail, museum, gallery and hospitality applications, this shift is essential. Lighting should adapt to the space without compromising how products, materials, artworks or people are seen.
